The management of Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has described as baseless, unfounded and malicious, allegation that it shifts power supply to ice block sellers in every Ramadan season in its three franchise areas of Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states.
BizPoint reports that it has come to the notice of people that the franchise areas, especially Kano, witness lower electricity supply whenever the holy month of Ramadan set in.
This prompted speculations, especially in social media that the company must have allegedly signed pact with ice block sellers in a bid to aid them make brisk business as their commodity is more demanded during the fasting period.
However, the company dismissed the speculation, blaming the epileptic power supply to the collapse of national grid.
Speaking to some selected journalists in Kano on Wednesday, who went to the KEDCO for clarification on the allegation, Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of the company, Mr Adeiza, said the allegation was untrue.

He disclosed that initially, KEDCO decided not to react to the allegation because it was never possible to enter into agreement with a segment of a society at the expense of others, adding that the visit of the journalists is what compelled the company to make clarification for clearance of doubt.
Adeize therefore attributed the power outage being experienced in Kano to the collapse of national grid.
The management also appealed to the general public in its franchise locations of Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states to exercise more patience as the company is working hard to improve power supplies.
Shedding more light on the problem, the Chief Commercial Officer of the company, Alhaji Abubakar Yusuf, explained that the distribution companies only supply what is given to them by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
He explained further that KEDCO is aware of the inconveniences faced by their customers in the three states resulting from drop in power supply causing serial outage especially during the current Ramadan fasting.
“Kano state is entitled to 8 percent of total power generated by the Gencos. Kano requires about 800mw to 1000mw for there to be a smooth and uninterrupted power supply in the state.
“However, only 200mw to 250mw is supplied for distribution in the state. Unfortunately, due to the technical situation on ground, only about 180mw and below is available for distribution in the state” he stated.
He further explained that there are other problems the interim management team of the company has inherited from the immediate past leadership that it is working to reduce to the bearest minimum.
These include among others repairs of broken down transformers, checking metre bypassing through the introduction of smart metres, reduction of vandalization and enforcement of payments by consumers.
He dismissed negative statement doing the round on social media depicting the company in bad image, insisting that DISCOs do not generate electricity, they only distribute what is given to them by the GENCOs.
