The epileptic power supply being experienced in the franchise area of Kano Electricity Distribution Company, KEDCO, comprising Kano, Jigawa and Katsina is due to disconnection of some feeders of the company by Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN.
BizPoint gathered that KEDCO is among several Distribution Companies, DIsCOs that were issued the disconnection order by TCN for failure to settle their debts, running into billions of Naira.
This newspaper understands that TCN had already disconnected some KEDCO’s lines since April 26, which served as a warning and is ready to completely disconnect the state should the company fail to respect its outstanding debts to the transmission company.
The disconnected feeders include Club Road/ CBN Feeder (Dan Agundi Substation) and Flour Mills, causing blackout into the affected states.
In a disconnection order, issued on April 24 and signed by Dr E. A. Eje, the Market Operator, TCN said; “The Maket Operator hereby issues a disconnection order for Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) for its non-compliance with the provisions of the Market Rules.

“The defaulting Market Participants including KEDCO have been duly notified of their infractions with respect to their outstanding debts to the Market Operator.
“Finally a newspaper publication was made in which a deadline was given to the defaulters to remedy their Market Rules infractions. This deadline has elapsed and hence justification for Market Operator’s sanctions in line with the Market Rules. Please find below details of the disconnection:
“Disconnection Date: 26th April, 2023
“Disconnection Time: 00:00 Hrs
Disconnection Point: Club Road/ CBN Feeder (Dan Agundi Substation) and Flour Mills.
“Transmission Region: Flour Mills Feeder (Dakata Substation) Kano Region:
“Note: Failure to comply with this disconnection order implies that TCN assumes liability for all liquidated damages”, the letter reads.
Also, the TCN’s Assistant General Manager, Kano Zone, Engineer Bello Muhammad, confirmed the authenticity of the disconnection order, which went viral on social media.
Muhammad also confirmed that TCN had already disconnected the aforementioned lines.
Reacting, the management of KEDCO, through its spokesman, Sani Bala Sani, confirmed the disconnection.
Sani, who is the Head, Corporate Communications of the company, said in a tersed statement that KEDCO is among other DisCos served with a disconnection order.
” 3 of our feeders were disconnected namely: CBN, Flour Mills and Club Road by the Market Operator due to non-compliance with the provision of market rules.
“However, we are currently working with Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and other relevant stakeholders to resolve the problem soonest.
“While we apologize for the inconvenience, we assure you of our continuous commitment to providing a reliable power supply,” Sani assured.
