Shuaibu Idris, headmaster of Kumbotso Special Primary School in Kumbotso Local Government area of Kano state has appealed to the state government to fence the school, established in 1948.
In an interview with journalists, who were at the school to monitor the ongoing construction and renovations of classrooms across the state as part of the implementation of state-of-emergency on education, the headmaster decried that lack of the perimeter fence is posing security concerns at the facility.
According to him, since the establishment of the school, which is the first in the Local Government, it has never had a perimeter fence, making it vulnerable to security challenges.

He decried that due to lack of the fence, pupils easily sneaked out of the school and go missing without notice, especially during break and -break periods.
He cited an incident of a pupil, who sneaked out of the school without notice and later declared missing until he was found in another Local Government far away from Kumbotso.
“This is our major concern. We have 2,890 pupils, mostly children who easily get out of the school without our notice. In the course of this, we have had some of them missing because the school has not fence.
“If there is fence, we would monitor the movement of our pupils easily because there would be a gate and security guards to see the movement of people in and out of the school.
“But due to lack of the fence, our children get missing. Look at the vast size of the school, you would not notice when a pupil would go out from any angle, that is how they get missing,” he said.
Additionally, the headmaster said the school is facing serial theft and encroachment by some members of the community where it is located.
He also appealed to the government to being more teachers as the existing ones, numbering 31 are not enough for the number of the students that is close to 3000.
He noted that addition of the teachers would enhance teaching and learning quality at the school that according to him, is faring at debates and other education competitions in the state.
“We also lack enough toilets. As big as this school and in view of the high of our pupils, four toilets are grossly inadequate. We need more please.

“The school also lacks desks. We have recently received 60 desks from the ones being distributed by the state government. We commend the government for this intervention. We now have four classes out of 14 that have desks.
“Interestingly, we have enough teaching materials. This happened with the intervention of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano state who provided enough instructional materials that were lacking previously.
“We also thank the governor for the construction of new classes which we need for long. This is highly commendable,” he said.
