Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering women economically, describing the state’s monthly women empowerment programme as a deliberate investment aimed at building a stronger and more prosperous Kano.
This was contained in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesman, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Saturday.
The Governor made the remarks during the July edition of the Monthly Women Empowerment and Poverty Relief Programme held at the Government House, Kano.
Governor Yusuf said the initiative goes beyond providing financial support, stressing that the monthly N50,000 grant is designed to equip women with the resources needed to establish and expand small-scale businesses, improve household incomes, and stimulate grassroots economic growth.
According to him, empowering women translates into stronger families, more vibrant communities, and a healthier state economy, noting that sustainable development can only be achieved when women are given the opportunity to thrive economically.
The Governor disclosed that the July edition of the programme featured a more rigorous beneficiary selection process supervised by the Office of the Director-General, Research and Documentation to ensure that only qualified beneficiaries were enrolled.
He urged recipients to invest the grants in viable income-generating ventures such as Gurasa production, groundnut oil processing, Kunun Zaki preparation, and other small businesses capable of providing sustainable livelihoods for their families.
Governor Yusuf explained that the programme is jointly funded by the Kano State Government and the 44 local government councils, with 5,200 women benefiting every month.
Under the arrangement, 100 women are selected from each of the 36 rural local government areas, while 200 beneficiaries are drawn from each of the eight metropolitan local government areas.
He reiterated that his administration would continue to sustain and expand the initiative as part of its broader commitment to poverty reduction, women empowerment, and inclusive economic development across the state.
Governor Yusuf also appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the First Lady for their continued support towards women farmers in Kano State, describing the intervention as complementary to the state’s efforts to strengthen agricultural productivity and improve livelihoods.
Earlier, the representative of the APC National Chairman and National Ex-Officio, Hon. Muhammad Jamu Yusuf, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ismail Jibril Falgore, and the Chairperson of ALGON in Kano State, Hajiya Sa’adatu Yushau Salisu, separately commended the initiative and pledged their continued support for Governor Yusuf’s people-oriented programmes.
