The Kano State Consumer Protection Council, KCPC, in collaboration with the leadership of Singer Market, has successfully apprehended some traders allegedly involved in an attempt backdate the expiry date of expired milk powder.
In a statement by Jamilu Mustapha Yakasai,
Director, Public Enlightenment, KCPC, the agency also sealed the shops where the suspects were allegedly found committing the act in the market.
According to Yakasai, the council launched the operation, led by the Director Operation, Auwalu A. Muhammad following a secret report from market association.
He explained that following the report, the Council immediately deployed its officers to the scene to investigate the matter, leading to the arrest of the suspected traders and the closure of the affected shops.

Yakasai added that the Director further stated that the Council is committed to doing everything within its powers to protect consumers’ rights, “particularly against the sale of expired products and goods whose expiry dates, labels, conditions or quality have been unlawfully altered”.
Earlier, while commenting on the operation, the Executive Secretary of the Council, Dr. Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, stated that the agency would not fold its arms and allow individuals or traders to violate the rights of consumers.
He noted that anyone found engaging in such unlawful practices would be prosecuted in court to face the full consequences of their actions.
“Dr. Ibrahim also commended the leadership of the market traders’ associations for their cooperation and partnership with the Council in the fight against adulterated and substandard products in markets, noting that such collaboration would go a long way in ensuring the protection of public health and consumer rights,” the statement added.
