The 2026 National Engineering Games (NEGGS), organised by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), held in Abuja on July 11, 2026, once again demonstrated that engineering is not only about designing structures, developing technologies and solving complex societal challenges.it is equally about nurturing healthy, resilient and united professionals.

Since its inception in 2011, the Nigerian Engineering Games have evolved into one of the flagship programmes of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, providing engineers across the country with an opportunity to step away from the demands of their profession and embrace physical fitness, recreation, camaraderie and personal well-being.

The 2026 edition reaffirmed this vision, highlighting the Games as a strategic platform for promoting wellness, professional networking and national unity within the engineering community.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr. Ali Alimasuya Rabiu, FNSE, F.ASCE, FAEng, MFR, represented by the Deputy President, Engr. Valerie Ifueko Agberagba, FNSE, emphasized that the Games were established with two fundamental objectives: to encourage engineers to maintain healthy lifestyles through active participation in sports, and to foster stronger relationships among professionals, government officials, industry leaders, development partners and members of the diplomatic community.

These objectives remain as relevant today as they were when the initiative was launched fifteen years ago.
This year’s Games featured a rich blend of physical sporting activities and intellectually stimulating competitions, reflecting the multidimensional nature of the engineering profession. Participants competed in the NSE Habu Gumel Marathon and Awareness Walk, Badminton, Lawn Tennis, Table Tennis, Volleyball, and Basketball, while mind games such as Chess, Scrabble, and the traditional African board game Ayo tested participants’ analytical thinking, strategic planning and decision-making skills.

The diversity of events ensured that every participant had an opportunity to contribute according to their strengths while reinforcing the values of teamwork, discipline and excellence.
Engineering is widely recognized as one of the most demanding professions. Engineers routinely work under tight deadlines, manage critical infrastructure, oversee complex projects and make decisions that directly impact public safety and national development. Such responsibilities require not only technical expertise but also physical endurance, emotional resilience and mental sharpness.

The Engineering Games therefore serve as a timely reminder that personal wellness is an essential component of professional excellence.
The Chairman of the 2026 Engineering Games Committee, Engr. Giandomenico Massari, JP, DSSRS, FNSE, LSMIEEE, aptly captured this philosophy through the timeless Latin expression, Mens sana in corpore sano—”a healthy mind in a healthy body.” He noted that the Games were conceived to promote physical fitness, mental alertness and social interaction among engineers, recognising that healthy professionals are better equipped to deliver innovative engineering solutions.

The inclusion of mind sports such as Chess, Scrabble and Ayo was particularly significant. These games require strategic thinking, patience, concentration, problem-solving and sound judgment the same competencies engineers apply daily in planning, design, project execution and risk management. By integrating intellectual competitions with physical sports, the Engineering Games underscore that engineering excellence depends on both mental agility and physical well-being.

Beyond individual health, the Games have become a powerful instrument for strengthening professional relationships across the engineering ecosystem. Engineers from diverse disciplines, sectors and geographical locations gathered not merely as competitors but as colleagues united by a shared commitment to national development. The interactions fostered during sporting activities created opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, knowledge exchange and professional networking that will continue long after the Games have concluded.

One of the defining highlights of the 2026 edition was the NSE Habu Gumel Marathon and Awareness Walk. Introduced in honour of the distinguished Past President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr. Ahmed Habu Gumel, FNSE, FAEng, OON, who currently serves as President of the Nigerian Olympic Committee, the marathon celebrates a leader whose contributions extend beyond engineering into sports administration at both national and international levels. The event symbolises endurance, discipline, perseverance and leadership—qualities that equally define successful engineering practice.

The 2026 Games further highlighted important principles that extend beyond sports into professional practice: accessibility, positive attitudes, informed choice, strong partnerships, effective communication, sound policy and equal opportunities. These values mirror the standards expected of engineering professionals and institutions committed to sustainable development and inclusive growth.

Equally significant is the culture of integrity and sportsmanship promoted by the Games. While medals and trophies recognize outstanding performances, the greater achievement lies in demonstrating discipline, fairness, respect for rules and mutual encouragement qualities that equally underpin ethical engineering practice. The Games remind participants that true success is measured not only by victory but also by character, professionalism and service to society.

The successful organisation of the 2026 National Engineering Games reflects the unwavering commitment of the leadership of the Nigerian Society of Engineers under the Leadership of Engr.Ali Alimasuya Rabiu and the National Engineering Games Committee, led by Engr. Giandomenico Massari. Their dedication ensured a memorable sporting festival that continues to grow in relevance, participation and national recognition.

As the Nigerian Society of Engineers continues to position itself as a leading professional institution, initiatives such as the Engineering Games demonstrate that excellence extends beyond technical competence. They promote healthy living, celebrate diversity, encourage lifelong friendships, strengthen professional networks, inspire leadership and reinforce the values that define the engineering profession.

The 2026 National Engineering Games therefore stand as more than a sporting competition. They represent an enduring investment in the people behind Nigeria’s engineering achievements—professionals whose physical well-being, mental resilience, ethical conduct and collaborative spirit remain indispensable to building a stronger engineering profession and a more prosperous nation.

Indeed, through the marathon and awareness walk, the intensity of basketball and volleyball, the precision of racket sports, and the strategic brilliance displayed in Chess, Scrabble and Ayo, the 2026 National Engineering Games celebrated the complete engineer technically competent, physically fit, intellectually agile, socially connected and fully prepared to contribute to Nigeria’s sustainable development.
